Role of an Art Director

There are five main areas that an Art director will play a major role:

  • Advertising, Branding and Packaging.

  • News Papers and Magazines.

  • Book Publishing.

  • Motion film and Theatre.

  • Music and Social Media.

It can mean different things in different organisations. Broadly, this job involves managing a team of designers working on a creative project, but the degree of responsibility and autonomy can vary. One key aspect of the art director role is that of management: for example, critiquing people's work, working to deadlines and budgets, and working with the designers to meet deadlines and complete their work. An art director's primary concern is to inspire and guide their team.

Day to day, they might be designing with the team, providing feedback on different jobs, attending meetings to define the direction of a client's wider creative strategy. Or they might be helping the team with aspects of the project to do with maybe the media or the content they are using.

There are a number of skills that you need for this role.

  • Time management.

  • Knowing when and where to best invest your energy,

  • when you need to get involved and when it’s better to be more hands off.

  • When to say yes, and importantly, when to say no.

A good art director has to be open to influence, inspiration and the expertise of the people around them, appreciating their talents, strengths and weaknesses, while maintaining a clear vision of delivering a message that speaks directly to the reader, viewer or user.Sometimes, this may be learned from their own mentors and passed down in a master-apprentice way, while others may formulate their process utterly independently, through their personal experience and trial and error.

There are five main areas that an Art director will play a major role within creative industries :

Advertising, Branding and Packaging.

The creative director is responsible for overseeing all creative products produced by an advertising agency. Creative directors ensure the agency produces high-quality creative content for its clients and oversee the entire creative team, including copywriters, art directors, and designers.

Newspapers and Magazines.

Art directors are responsible for the visual style and images in magazines, newspapers, product packaging, and movie and television productions. They create the overall design for a project, and also direct others who develop the artwork or layouts. They also approve the work before it is brought to the editor.

Book Publishing.

In publishing, art directors typically oversee the page layout of catalogues, newspapers, or magazines. They also choose the cover art for books and periodicals. Often, this work includes publications for the Internet, so art directors oversee production of the websites used for publication.

Motion film and Theatre.

The creative director has an important responsibility in this industry. The director must devise ideas to lead a video game project forward and many responsibilities involve working with various individuals or teams spread out within the entire project or video-game production.

Music and Social Media.

Creative directors are the creative leads at advertising and marketing companies, working with designers, artists, copywriters, sales teams and marketers to create a vision for products sold. Creative directors plan advertising, oversee the creative process and give guidance to the creative people that work under them.

‘’With our 5th season of Deadliest Catch, we set out to show just how intense this job really is. Having been to Alaska to photograph and share a beer with these fishermen, we understood why they say "the only thing crazier than this job is the men who do it". It's a world where the rules don't apply, up is down and everything is out to get you. Waves grow bigger than a house. Temperatures freeze the snot in your nose. Ironically, there's no place these guys would rather be.’’

Show Premise: Crab fishing in the Bering Sea is dangerous, and these guys love it that way. This reality show captures how treacherous their jobs really are. Creative Task: Create a campaign that captures the intense nature of their jobs.
